3: MUSICAL MOVEMENT

FLUTE bands, bagpipers, fiddlers, buskers and singer-songwriters – music has played a central role in Scottish street politics for generations.

During the ‘Yes’ campaign, bands from socialist and republican organisations added noise, colour, momentum and swagger to parades held through towns and cities. Elsewhere on pavements, parks and in pubs, smaller groups of buskers, folk singers and other performers put their talents to the cause.

Whether large or small-scale, formal or informal, these musicians highlight a proud, grassroots cultural scene which is a million miles away from the stage-managed events typical of the big Westminster parties.
